Sarah Elizabeth Raines nee Siebenmorgen

Sarah passed away peacefully at age 102 on August 24, 2024.

Sarah was born in Terre Haute, Indiana to Louis Siebenmorgen, M.D., and Ruby Curtis Siebenmorgen.

She attended Indiana State University and graduated at age 20 with a science background and a teaching certificate. She met her husband, Dale Raines, M.D., in an embryology class.  She taught high school science for two years and then she became a research associate at Standard Oil in NW Indiana.

Dale and Sarah married on January 11, 1947, after he returned from serving in the U.S. Army as a medical officer in the Philippines and Japan. She continued to work at Standard Oil until the birth of her first child. She is survived by her children, John (Maribet), Robert “Pete” (Carol), James (Ottie), Patty (Michael Kapp), and Barbara Soderstrom (Richard), nine grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.

Her life was full of many friends, raising her children, and volunteer activities including the Beverly Nearly New Shop, Christ Hospital Auxiliary, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the PTA. She loved playing bridge and golf and spending time with her grandchildren. With Dale’s busy professional schedule, she was the one who kept the family running. She was always available to help her five successful children complete their school projects and attended their activities.

Sarah was the consummate hostess for her family. She loved nothing more than having her entire family at the table. Her grandchildren remember that if they were arriving at midnight, she would have a chocolate cake waiting for them. For many years she would host Thanksgiving dinner for as many as could come. If there were friends who were going to be alone, she would include them as well.
